Dear Jan

We know an ankle brace protects injured ankle ligaments, but does it really make a difference to recovery and performance?

This question sparked my interest many years ago and ultimately formed the foundation of my Master's research in Biokinetics. My thesis investigated the effect of a semi-rigid ankle brace on the neuromuscular control of previously injured ankles.

Today, my findings remain just as relevant, reinforcing the value of Breg's Ankle Wraptor in rehabilitation, injury prevention and helping athletes return to sport with greater confidence.

Research Background:

Lateral ankle sprains are among the most common sports-related injuries, with recurrence rates reported in up to one-third of athletes.

The Peroneus Longus muscle serves as the ankle's primary dynamic stabiliser, playing a crucial role in protecting the joint against excessive inversion movements. While semi-rigid ankle braces have long been recognised for reducing the incidence of ankle injuries, their influence on neuromuscular control has been less clearly understood.

Research Overview:

Using a custom-designed 35° inversion platform and surface electromyography (EMG), two key variables, namely Latency and Amplitude, were measured.

    Fig 2

    Key Findings:

    Neuromuscular Response Time (Latency):

    • The Breg Ankle Wraptor did not significantly alter the reaction time of the Peroneus Longus.
    • This indicates that the brace does not delay the body's natural protective neuromuscular response during sudden inversion movements.

    Muscle Activation (Amplitude):

    • Wearing the semi-rigid ankle brace resulted in reduced Peroneus Longus muscle activation during inversion.
    • This suggests that the brace provides meaningful mechanical support, reducing the workload placed on the stabilising muscles while still allowing them to respond effectively when needed.

    Clinical Significance:

My findings demonstrate that the Breg Ankle Wraptor provides effective mechanical stability without compromising the speed of the ankle's protective neuromuscular response.

By preserving reaction time whilst reducing the muscular demand placed on the Peroneus Longus, the brace offers an excellent solution for:

    ✅ Rehabilitation following ankle injury
    ✅ Safe return to sport
✅ Prevention of recurrent lateral ankle sprains
✅ Increased confidence during activity and competition

    Warm regards,
    Elrise
